Both my father, Rufino, and my mother, Pastori, were born in the farms of Errezil and Zestoa and come from the rural world. Thirty-five years ago, my family bought the Irure Txiki farmhouse on land in Zestoa.
Cider has always been made in these areas. Together with the farmhouse, there were also some apple orchards and from the very beginning we expanded the land destined to the cultivation of apple trees and our dedication them to our care.
Irure Txiki is in Ibañarrieta, a small neighbourhood between the towns of Zumaia and Zestoa. To the south we have the enormous presence of the Izarraitz mountain range, and to the north the Cantabrian Sea.
This coastal feature means that the temperatures in the area are not extreme, neither in winter nor in summer. Perhaps this helps to explain why it has historically been an area rich in apple trees as well as other fruit trees.
In my family we have always been fond of cider and the nature that surrounds it. For this reason, when I decided to link my professional and personal life to the farmhouse, I chose to dedicate myself to cider production.
My name is Aitor Eizmendi, a resident of Zumaia, and in 2001 I started to market our organic cider under the brand name EKAIN.
The name of the brand is a small tribute to my mother, who was born in a place very close to the Ekain cave, a cave known for its cave paintings. From these prehistoric paintings we copied the horse in our logo, a symbol of Ekain organic products.

Three decades have passed since then, three decades full of hard family work, dreams and investments. It was my personal and professional commitment to happiness, the challenge of building a life project linked to the farm and nature. I feel fortunate to have made this decision.
Cider, juice and vinegar, proud of what our apples give us.
